Researched 2026-09-01 21:50 KSTCash spent on plant and intangibles, KRW 603.9bn, was larger than the quarter's operating profit of KRW 440.4bn.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics makes MLCCs (multilayer ceramic capacitors), camera modules and semiconductor package substrates. Second-quarter 2026 revenue came to KRW 3,457.2bn, up 24 percent from a year earlier, and operating profit doubled to KRW 440.4bn, up 107 percent, driven by data-center MLCCs and high-end substrates for big-tech customers. In the same quarter the company paid out KRW 603.9bn for plant and intangible assets, more than the KRW 556.8bn its operations brought in, and covered the gap by adding KRW 332.9bn of new borrowings.

More went out than came in
Operations generated KRW 556.8bn of cash in the quarter. Purchases of plant and intangible assets took KRW 603.9bn over the same three months, more than the quarter's entire operating profit of KRW 440.4bn. The shortfall was funded with debt: borrowings rose by KRW 332.9bn in the quarter, taking the total to KRW 2,994.4bn, up 51 percent from KRW 1,986.6bn a year earlier. The book value of property, plant and equipment grew 21 percent over the same year, from KRW 5,671.8bn to KRW 6,870.6bn. Even in a quarter when profit doubled, the build-out moved faster.
Where cash came from and went, Q2 2026 (KRW bn)

All three divisions grew, substrates fastest
By division, revenue was KRW 1,649.4bn for Components, KRW 1,036.2bn for Optics and Communication, and KRW 771.6bn for Package Solutions, up 29, 10 and 37 percent respectively from a year earlier. The company said data-center MLCC sales grew sharply and that high-end substrates for accelerator chips and server CPUs supplied to big-tech customers drove the substrate business. Optics was the only division to shrink against the prior quarter, down 4 percent, which the company attributed to seasonality. Components, meaning MLCCs and other passive parts, still accounts for 48 percent of total revenue.
Revenue by division, Q2 2026 (KRW bn)
- Components (MLCCs and passives)1649.4
- Optics and Communication (camera modules)1036.2
- Package Solutions (substrates)771.6
The arithmetic behind a 12.7 percent margin
While revenue grew 24 percent, cost of sales rose only 18 percent, from KRW 2,219.2bn to KRW 2,612.7bn. That is why gross margin climbed from 20.3 to 24.4 percent. Selling and administrative expenses rose just 15 percent. The result was an operating margin of 12.7 percent against 7.6 percent a year earlier. The company did not simply ship more volume; it sold more of its higher-priced products, and it said as much, pointing to high-capacity, high-reliability MLCCs and premium substrates.
Quarterly operating margin
%About ten long-term contracts, and the build-out behind them
The company announced long-term MLCC supply agreements with about ten customers, including top-tier hyperscalers and major semiconductor makers, without naming any of them. It is expanding capacity to serve those contracts, saying substrate production lines at home and abroad are being added, and capital spending did in fact more than double in a single quarter. The balance sheet shows the cost of that growth: inventories rose 26 percent in a year and receivables 35 percent. The figures also carry a caveat printed on the first page of the release, that they are preliminary and the external auditor's review was not yet complete.

Common questions
- What does Samsung Electro-Mechanics actually make?
- Components that go inside phones and servers. Its three businesses are passive parts such as MLCCs, which store and release electric charge, camera modules, and package substrates that semiconductors are mounted on. In the second quarter of 2026, 48 percent of revenue came from the Components division, which includes MLCCs.
- Profit doubled, so why did borrowings go up too?
- Because the KRW 603.9bn spent on plant and intangible assets exceeded the KRW 556.8bn that operations brought in. The company added KRW 332.9bn of borrowings in the quarter to cover the difference, lifting total borrowings to KRW 2,994.4bn.
- Who signed the long-term MLCC supply contracts?
- The company did not disclose names. It said only that the roughly ten customers include top-tier hyperscalers and major semiconductor makers, and that it is responding to requests for additional contracts.
