Researched 2026-08-20 16:40 KSTOf the 89.5 trillion won in group operating profit, 89.2 trillion came from semiconductors.
Samsung Electronics reported revenue of 171.5 trillion won and operating profit of 89.5 trillion won for the second quarter of 2026. The Device Solutions arm, which runs memory and foundry, accounted for 127.5 trillion won of that revenue and 89.2 trillion won of the profit, while Device Experience, the phone and appliance side, booked 48 trillion won in revenue and an operating loss of 0.8 trillion won. With group profit resting on memory almost alone, this stock tracks the memory price cycle closely. Every figure below is taken straight from the company's own quarterly releases.

Where the money comes from
Samsung splits into four reporting arms: Device Solutions for memory and foundry, Device Experience for phones, televisions and appliances, a display panel business, and Harman, the audio and automotive subsidiary. In the second quarter of 2026, Device Solutions alone brought in 127.5 trillion won, more than the other three combined. Adding the arms together gives a bigger number than the 171.5 trillion won group figure because sales between affiliates are stripped out before consolidation.

Which way results have moved
Revenue over the last three quarters ran 93.8, 133.9 and 171.5 trillion won, while operating profit went from 20.1 to 89.5 trillion won. One arm explains most of that curve. Device Solutions revenue stood at 44 trillion won in the fourth quarter of 2025 and reached 127.5 trillion won two quarters later. The company said server-bound products drove its record quarter and that it expects semiconductor demand to stay strong through the second half.

Profit comes from one arm only
Line the arms up by operating profit and the shape is obvious: 89.2 trillion won at Device Solutions, 0.7 trillion at display, 0.4 trillion at Harman, and a 0.8 trillion won loss at Device Experience. Handset sales rose on the Galaxy S26 and the mid-range A series, but rising component costs ate the gain. When memory prices climb, the side of the house that sells chips and the side that buys them move in opposite directions.

What would move it
First, memory prices. With 89.2 of the 89.5 trillion won in profit coming from Device Solutions, a turn in pricing shows up in group earnings just as fast. Second, the currency. The company said a stronger dollar added roughly 3.1 trillion won to operating profit this quarter, and the same mechanism runs in reverse. Third, component costs at Device Experience: Samsung itself pointed to global uncertainty and rising part prices in the second half, and said the arm needs to sharpen its competitiveness and restructure.
Common questions
- What does Samsung Electronics actually earn from?
- Semiconductors. Of the 89.5 trillion won in group operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, 89.2 trillion came from Device Solutions, the memory and foundry arm. On revenue it is the same story: 127.5 trillion won out of a 171.5 trillion won group total.
- Why is the handset arm losing money?
- Device Experience posted 48 trillion won in revenue and an operating loss of 0.8 trillion won in the second quarter of 2026. The company said Galaxy S26 and A series sales grew but that higher component costs offset the gain.
- How much did the exchange rate contribute this quarter?
- A stronger dollar added about 3.1 trillion won to operating profit, according to the company. That is roughly three percent of the 89.5 trillion won quarterly figure.
